About Wagrain
Wagrain is in Pongau, about 9 km east of St. Johann in Pongau.
The highest mountain is Kizstein at 2,037m and it is to the south of Wagrain.
The name Wagrain come from two German words "wag" meaning fast-flowing water, river and "rein" meaning meadow, field boundary and cliff. In 1243 the name "Wakrein" was first shown in a historical document. By 1350 the town name had become "Wachrain". In 1382 it had become "Wakchrain". Over the passage of time with the influence of the most dialect this had become the name that we know today, Wagrain.
Some of the most popular hiking spots in the area are: Öbristkopf at 1.411m, Grießenkareck (Flying Mozart) at 1.991m and Sonntagskogel (Grafenberg) at 1.849m.
